Temasik Review : High Court rejects appeal on Thaipusam rules

The High Court has thrown out an application to stop the Government from enforcing police guidelines on the public’s behaviour during Thaipusam, which was announced for the first time by Hindu Endowments Board (HEB).

The HEB had earlier said that enforcing the rules will address issues of noise and crowd control, which have been escalating at Thaipusam processions in recent years.

The application for a court order against the guidelines was filed last Thursday, ahead of tomorrow’s Thaipusam festival, by human rights lawyer M. Ravi.

He added that enforcing the curbs would ‘endanger the safety and personal liberty of devotees’.

Thaipusam is an annual celebration by Hindus to honour Lord Murugan, a Hindu deity.
